What is Reflexology Lymph Drainage (RLD)?
Reflexology Lymph Drainage, or RLD, is a technique which focuses on stimulating the lymphatic reflexes on the feet. It is a unique sequence that has been researched and developed by Sally Kay BSc (Hons) whilst working in Cancer Care. Sally was awarded the Federation of Holistic Therapies Excellence in Practice Award in 2012 for research and development into Reflexology Lymph Drainage. In addition she was awarded funding by a Welsh cancer charity Tenovus for further research in partnership with Cardiff Metropolitan University. The summary of data from this RLD research found that all 26 participants had reductions in lymphatic swelling of the affected arm. For further details about this amazing study please visit Sally Kay's website www.reflexologylymphdrainage.co.uk.
As the lymphatic reflexes are stimulated in the feet, the aim of this therapy is to cause an effect within the lymphatic system in the body. Swelling should reduce within the affected area. Studies have shown that with repeated treatments of Reflexology Lymph Drainage the fluid build up does not return to the maximum level previously experienced by the client.
Lymphatic drainage massage (MLD) is used to treat other conditions as well as lymphoedema, and RLD may be used similarly.
What conditions can Reflexology Lymph Drainage help with?
RLD may be useful with the following conditions:
Lymphoedema
It is advised that a minimum of 4 weekly sessions of Reflexology Lymph Drainage should be booked as this shows to be most effective. Follow up sessions can be booked as and when required. Some clients will be happy to have monthly maintenance treatments whereas others will prefer to have one-off sessions when they feel it is necessary - it is entirely up to you.
